A Wenatchee, Washington, doctor and father of pro cyclist Tyler Farrar is suffering from a severe spinal injury after being struck head-on by a car Wednesday morning.
Ed Farrar, 57, is an orthopedic surgeon in central Washington; his son Tyler is a member of the Garmin-Chipotle pro cycling team and grew up in the Wenatchee area.
Farrar was riding Wednesday morning when a 56-year-old security guard driving a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria took his eyes off the road, drifted into his lane and struck him. According to police:
“He had dropped his clipboard down to the floorboard. He reached down to pick it up and took his eyes off the road.”
Farrar's colleague at Wenatchee Orthopaedics said Farrar suffered a severe spine injury.
Ed Farrar writes a bicycling blog for the Wenatchee World online newspaper. He recently posted a piece entitled “The agony of indoor cycling.”
The proud father also gets to brag about his son on the blog, citing his recent 5th place finish at Paris-Tours:
“However, there is a Garmin jersey pulling ahead of all of these guys… and…Yep, the young American wins the bunch sprint to take 5th place! (as you might have guessed, his name is Tyler Farrar) “
Tyler has had a great year with Garmin-Chipotle, winning the Tour of the Bahamas and wearing the yellow jersey one day at the Tour of California.
Jerry Brewer at the Seattle Times writes that Tyler got interested in cycling at about age 8 when he travelled to France with his parents and they ended up following the Tour de France for a couple of weeks.
From the email at Wenatchee World, you can see that Ed has helped people throughout central Washington and many are wishing him a speedy recovery. I certainly do as well.
