More than 23,000 exhibitors and attendees crammed the Sands Exposition Center in Las Vegas last month for the Interbike International Bicycle Expo where some 1,100 brands were displayed.
Imagine. That's bigger than many towns I've lived or worked in. And everyone was there to meet, greet and talk about bicycles.
The indoor expo was preceded again this year by the Outdoor Demo in Bootleg Canyon in nearby Boulder City, Nevada. The 5,000 people who attended that hands-on event set a record.
Summing up the week, an Interbike official said:
After months of high gas prices, the industry placed significant emphasis on the commuter, urban and lifestyle categories. This included several new exhibitors specifically focused on this market segment along with new bikes and product lines from established brands such as Dahon, Electra, QBP, Raleigh, Schwinn, Shimano, Specialized and SRAM.
Future dates
Although the annual Interbike show is over, a new East Coast version of the Outdoor Demo will be launched Oct. 21-22 in Providence, R.I. It will be held at Roger Williams Park from 9 – 5 those two days.
The industry-only event targets east coast dealers and their staff. About 45 bicycle and accessory manufacturers are scheduled to exhibit.
And if you're planning ahead to 2009, the Interbike Outdoor Expo is scheduled for Sept. 21-22 at Bootleg Canyon, and the International Bike Expo will be Sept. 23-25 at the Sands.
