Deadline looms to nominate Bicycle Travel Awards

Is there someone you met on a bicycle tour this year who you think deserves recognition for the help they offer bicyclists?

Then you need to drop everything and fill out the Bicycle Travel Awards nominations at Adventure Cycling. The deadline is Sept. 30.

At left is my picture of June Curry taken 24 years ago. She's the famous “Cookie Lady” of Afton, Virginia, and was certainly deserving of having the Trail Angel award named for her in 2003.

Since then, the Adventure Cycling organization has added three other awards. Here's a list of all the Bicycle Travel Awards. You can make nominations for any except the “volunteer award:”

June Curry Trail Angel Award — Acknowledges individuals or groups encountered during a bicycle tour who have time and again made cycling journeys easier.

Pacesetter Bicycle Travel Award — For those who contributed to the success of bicycle travel across the U.S. through extraordinary efforts. This could be creating an interconnected set of bicycle routes in a state, designing a touring-length rails-to-trails route, leading physically challenged youth on multi-day bike adventures, providing a national bicycle travel resource directory, and much more.

Sam Braxton Bicycle Shop Award — Honors bicycle shops that provide exemplary services to bicycle tourists.

Adventure Cycling Volunteer of the Year Award — This one is nominated by Adventure Cycling insiders.

Adventure Cycling rules state that the acts of goodwill didn't have to occur in 2008. That means I could nominate Bryan and Janette from Chanute, Kansas, who reunited me and my bike tour buddy after we had become separated in 1984. Or the owner of Harley's bike shop in Hutchinson, Kansas, who stayed open late to fix my buddy's bike, then gave us the keys to a youth hostel. Or the restaurant owners on the C&O Canal in Hancock, Maryland, who let me sleep out a storm on their porch in 1978.
