Team Columbia's Michael Barry can boast of a solo victory at the Tour of Missouri after attacking on the final circuits and winning by a comfortable margin.
Christian Vande Velde of Garmin-Chipotle sprinted in with the chase group, finishing in 4th place on the day and holding onto the overall leader's yellow jersey for another day. Last year's winner George Hincapie finished in that chase group also, but didn't contest the sprint.
Commentators estimated the average winning speed at 30 mph for the 95-mile stage between Lebanon and Rolla, as the leaders finished well ahead of schedule.
A lead group developed in mountains, where Vande Velde was helped out of trouble by teammate Tom Danielson. Later Barry and three others attacked to form a breakaway; Barry attacked again with Jeff Louder with about 13 miles to go; and attacked again with nine miles to go to win the race.
The top 10 overall:
1.Christian Vande Velde (Garmin-Chipotle)
2.Michael Rogers (Columbia), at 21 seconds
3. Svein Tuft (Symmetrics), at 44 seconds
4. George Hincapie (Columbia), at 1:03
