Golden jersey slips from Leipheimer's grasp again at Vuelta

Spanish cyclist Egoi Martinez joined a breakaway and gained just enough time to take the overall leader's golden jersey from Levi Leipheimer, who lost it for the second time on Stage 9 of the Vuelta a Espana on Monday.

Reports suggest that Leipheimer's Astana team miscalculated and allowed the 11-man escape group to get too much of a lead before starting the chase.

Martinez was sitting 6:41 in back of Leipheimer at the beginning of the day, so they may not have been too worried about him. Now Leipheimer is back in second place, 11 seconds behind Martinez of the Euskaltel-Euskadi team.

The other heavy favorites in the race are Alberto Contador in 3rd place, Alejandro Valverde in 4th place and Carlos Sastre in 5th place.

Greg van Avermaet of Belgium (Silence-Lotto) took the sprint in the breakaway group.
