Marianne Vos of The Netherlands won the Olympic gold medal in the 100-lap women's points race at the Laoshan Velodrome on Monday.

She took the first of 10 sprints and lapped the field in the 25-kilometer track cycling race.

Crash

Bad luck plagued Sarah Hammer of the US, though, as she was caught in a crash caused by another rider about 25 laps into the race. She could not finish the event and later was diagnosed with a broken collar bone.

Hammer, whose 25th birthday was Monday, was one of Team USA's top prospects for medalling at the Beijing Olympics. She had a strong career in track cycling as a junior, dropped out for a while, but returned to the sport about four years ago.

The Californian won two of the past three World Championships in the 3000 meter individual pursuit. She failed to qualify for the finals in that event on Saturday.

Winning the silver in the women's points race was Yoanka Gonzales; Spain's Leire Olabberia came in third for the bronze.

Results at the official Olympics website.

Video stream

A replay of Monday's women's points race, the men's and women's sprint quarterfinals, and the men's team pursuit finals is available at the NBCOlympics.com video page. The crash occurs about 17:40 into the video stream of the day's events. You can see Hammer was pretty far away from the initial contact. Bad luck.
