“I'm like a diesel engine now. I have no fast twitch, but I am quite efficient.
“My biggest concern is to get through the first 120 miles. I know after then I will start to feel good.''
— US cyclist Christian Vande Velde interviewed by the Chicago Tribune about his chances at the bicycle road race event at the Bejing Olympics Games.
Vande Velde, 32, is the hometown boy for Chicago, having grown up in nearby Lemont, Illinois. Having just come off a 5th place finish at the Tour de France, he said he still feels strong and will keep his fitness level high for the Olympic games.
Vande Velde is among five US cyclists competing in the arduous 152-mile road road that passes Beijing landmarks before completing several laps to the Great Wall. The other are George Hincapie, David Zabriskie, Levi Leipheimer and Jason McCartney.
Zabriskie and Leipheimer are the only two US cyclists competing in the Olympic time trial competition on Wednesday.
The road race will be video-streamed live at NBC Olympics beginning at 11 p.m. Friday (ET); that's 8 p.m. Friday (PT). The men's time trial will be video streamed at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday (ET); 10:30 p.m. Tuesday (PT). See more video-streaming and TV broadcast schedules.
When checking the Olympic cycling schedule in Beijing time, be sure to subtract 12 hours for the East Coast, 13 hours for Central, 14 hours for Mountain, and 15 hours for the Pacific time zones.
