GRABAAWR bike tour in Wisconsin makes changes due to flooding

Heavy rains and flooding in Wisconsin have prompted organizers of the Great Annual Bicycle Adventure Along the Wisconsin River (GRABAAWR) to move this year's staging area to another location in Prairie du Chien.

Road closures by the Wisconsin DOT, especially in hard-hit south central portions of the state, may require other changes during the bike tour (June 21-28) that will be announced at nightly rider meetings.

Participants who are taking motor coaches from the finish in Prairie du Chien to this year's start in Eagle Lake will be affected by the changes announced Thursday. The staging area has been moved from the Jaycees Shelter on St. Feriole Island near Villa Louis to higher ground at Bluff View Middle School, 1901 E. Wells St., Prairie du Chien.

GRABAAWR has provided a map to the new staging area, and reports that all packet pick-up times, pre-ride camping and long-term parking fees will remain the same. Details at Staging Area update.

This year's GRABAAWR is limited to 900 riders, as usual, and begins in Eagle Lake. It follows roads along the Wisconsin River before ending at Prairie du Chien.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has closed scores of roads and miles of interstate highway late this week due to rising flood waters in the state, particularly in the south and central locations. Those road closures are listed at the Wisconsin DOT website; the state also has a road closure map.

Although the GRABAAWR is a week away, it's hard to tell what the conditions of the route will be at that time. GRABAAWR officials urge bike tour participants to check the bike tour forum or look for “Latest News” on the GRABAAWR website home page for updates, instead of calling or e-mailing the office.
