While week-long bicycle riders across Nebraska (BRAN) and South Dakota (Tour de Kota) have been facing wind and cool temperatures this week, Bicycle Ride Across Georgia cyclists are sweltering in the heat.
Temperatures are hovering in the upper 90s for cyclists riding the 413 miles from Oxford (east of Atlanta) to St. Simon's Island on the coast, where the temperature is finally expected to be cooler.
One of the oldest cross-state bike tours, this is the 29th year for BRAG, which is seeing participation up a couple of hundred riders from last year. Registration is about 1,800 riders, which includes the three-day BRAG Lite cyclists.
The cyclists have been warned to drink plenty of fluids and to take along water bottles in addition to hydration packs they might be carrying.
On Tuesday, a cyclist riding the segment from Macon to Dublin went down when he lost control of his bicycle while crossing some tracks. The Macon Telegraph reports the man, identified as Palmer Dasher of Hinesville, has been released from the hospital.
