New Belgium Brewery kicked off its 2008 Urban Assault Ride series with a first-ever visit to Seattle on Sunday.
Fifty 2-person teams bicycled the meandering course through Seattle and attempted the bizarre and fun challenges along the way, namely bicycle jousting, human wheel-barrow pushing and a big-wheels racing grand finale.
Seven other cities are lined up for the “contest” later on. They are Portland, Austin, Fort Collins, Denver, Madison, Minneapolis, and Chicago (dates below).
I stumbled across the event while cycling along the Burke Gilman trail down by the waterfront on Sunday.
New Belgium Brewery had events set up in a parking lot across from REI, Recycled Cycles, in Gas Works Park, Gregg's Cycles, and Bike Sport. There was a “mystery checkpoint” that participants had to find by following clues handed out at the venues.
Most folks took it all in good fun, and used it as an excuse to work up a good thirst for the beer garden at the finish line in the Fremont neighborhood. Judging from arrivals there, it seemed like it was taking most teams at least three hours to finish the course.
The event sponsored Bike Works, a community bike shop in Rainier Valley that provides kids with bicycles and the means to keep them repaired.
