Team High Road's Mark Cavendish missed a final kilometer crash to win Stage 4 at the Giro d'Italia on Tuesday.
The UK sprinter passed Monday's winner, Daniele Bennati (Liquigas), in the sprint to the finish. Milram tried to deliver Erik Zabel, but the German sprinter couldn't accelerate to win. He finished in 6th.
Franco Pellizotti (Liquigas) remains in first place overall, with a one-second lead over American cyclist Christian Vande Velde of Slipstream Chipotle.
All-day break
Despite the efforts at the finish line, the most amazing ride of the day came from Rik Verbrugghe, who attacked immediately. The Cofidis cyclist led the race until about 12 miles from the finish line, where the peloton caught him on a hill.
The Giro returned to the mainland on Tuesday with the 113-mile mostly flat stage from Pizzo Calabro to Catanzaro-Lungomare.
High Road
I'm glad to see Team High Road make its mark so early in the Giro. The organizers originally left the team off its starting roster because of doping issues it had over the years at T-Mobile.
The team cleaned up its act, however, and moved its headquarters to the US. It was reinstated into the Giro after it proved it was closely monitoring its riders.
The best known rider on the team to Americans is George Hincapie, who is not at the Giro. A teammate from Belarus, Kanstantsin Sivtsov (who is at the Giro), won the Tour de Georgia last month.
On Wednesday, the peloton will roll for about 125 miles from Belvedere Marittimo to Contursi Terme.
