Watching the 2008 Giro d'Italia

Once again, you'll be able to bring live action from the 2008 Giro d'Italia right to your home or office computer with video streaming or text updates.

The Versus cable network is offering a live video feed from the bike race across Italy via Cycling.tv. The $29.99 offer includes the live feed and daily highlights, as well as this year's Milan-San Remo and Tirreno Adriatico. Sign up at the Versus-Cycling.tv Giro package site.

The one catch is that the offer doesn't include any Sunday stages, as they will be televised by Versus on cable during Cyclysm Sundays. Dates and times for Giro coverage on Cyclysm Sundays: 4 p.m. May 11, May 18 and May 25 and 3 p.m. on June 1 (all times are ET).

The Eurosport website has a full page of Giro d'Italia coverage this year. They offered live audio of race commentary last year and it looks like they'll be doing so this year as well. Check their Giro website or check back here on Saturday for details. (Here's a link to the Giro coverage schedule.)

For those who might find it inconvenient to have cycling coverage blaring from their computer at work, or if you don't want to tie up your bandwidth, you can keep up to date at CyclingNews and VeloNews. Both offer frequent updates on the stage status and on-the-road leaders.

Also, SlipstreamSports.com will have live updates via Twitter from the team car.

In Australia, the SBS TV network will broadcast daily updates of the Giro at 7:15 a.m. from Sunday through June 2.

Highlights

The 2008 Giro d'Italia rolls out from Palermo on Saturday and finishes in Milan on June 1. Along the way, it passes some 2,122 miles of scenic Italian countryside.

The 91st edition of the Giro starts with a team time trial and adds on three individual time trial through the course of the race. David Zabriskie of the Slipstream-Chipotle team must be licking his chops over that. By the way, this year is the 20th anniversary of Andy Hampsten winning the Giro; he's the only American to do so.

Zabriskie is one of six US cyclists in the race. The other include teammates Jonathan Patrick McCarty, Danny Pate, and Christian VandeVelde, as well as Levi Leipheimer of Astana and Jason McCartney of Team CSC.
