Five dads are pedaling out of Lansing, Michigan, this August to begin a five-day, 758-mile bicycle tour to Washington DC.
That might not be an epic bike ride, but these guys who will be riding 150 miles a day aren't exactly ultra-athletes. And they'll be tackling some challenging terrain as they pass through Pennsylvania.
The five are undertaking the Equal Parenting Bike Trek to call attention to the need for children to have equal time with both parents, who are willing and fit, after a divorce. They maintain that parents also have the right for equal time with their children.
Fourth year
This is the fourth year for the bike ride, and the five certainly won't be traveling alone. One of the repeat cyclists, Robert Pedersen, expects more than a hundred supporters to join them for shorter stretches. They'll also be bird-dogged by a huge motorcoach sponsored by CRISPE, Children's Rights Initiative for Sharing Parents Equally.
The five are leaving Lansing on Aug. 7. They'll participate in the Family Preservation Festival (turn down your sound before visiting this page) in Washington DC on Aug. 15-17.
In addition to Pedersen, co-founder of A Child's Right, the other cyclists are:
Robb MacKenzie, founder of the US Equal Parenting Bike Trek;
Brian Downs, a local attorney running for judge;
Derek Bailey, founder of Dance4Equality, and
Mike Saxton, a member of Dads and Moms of Michigan.
