Haedo wins Stage 2; Dominguez holds yellow in Tour de Georgia

You could probably guess that if Argentine sprinter J.J. Haedo was signed up for the Tour de Georgia, he wouldn't be quiet for long.

We heard from the Team CSC speedster at the close of Stage 2 on Tuesday, when he missed a crash on the final turn in Augusta and passed an isolated Ivan Dominguez to capture his sixth win of the season.

Monday's winner Dominguez (Toyota-United) hung on to finish in third place, after Team High Road's Greg Henderson, and retain the yellow jersey for another day as overall race leader.

Break o' the day

Tuesday's 117-mile stage started in Statesboro and coursed through the mostly flat Georgia coastal plain to the final circuits around Augusta.

Toyota-United cyclist Justin England launched a breakaway about 40 miles into the race and was joined by Rhys Pollock of Marco Polo and Bryce Mead of Jelly Belly. After gaining up to six minutes and hanging off the front for some 60 miles, the trio was pulled in about 15 miles from Augusta.

Another attack closer to town didn't amount to much.

Haedo

I remember stage-winner Haedo coming to prominence as a Toyota-United sprinter in the inaugural Tour of California in 2006. He scored two wins in that Tour, as well as winning one stage each at the Redlands Classic and Tour de Georgia, for a total 13 victories that year.

He was plucked up last year by Team CSC, and he didn't disappoint. In addition to 7 wins, he won the green jerseys at Tour of California and Tour de Georgia. So far in 2008, he has had one win at the Tour of California, today's at Tour de Georgia, and four others.

Terrain

I'd be surprised if either Haedo or Dominguez make any noise at the finish in Wednesday's Stage 3 from Washington to Gainesville. This race is climing toward the mountains, and there's plenty of terrain tomorrow.
