What started in 1991 as a gathering of about 350 mountain bikers in the hills near Monterey, California, has grown into an annual event that's expected to draw 10,000 athletes and 50,000 cycling fans.
The 18th annual Sea Otter Classic runs Thursday through Sunday at the Laguna Seca Recreational Area (directions) with road, BMX and mountain bike racing and demos.
Fans also can visit a trade show featuring nearly 250 exhibitors that's open throughout the festival. Also, cyclists can participate in either a 15- or 100-mile bike tour on Sunday that passes through Carmel and Monterey.
The Classic runs from 9 to 5 Thursday through Saturday and 9 to 4 on Sunday. Admission is $10 per day, or $30 for a four day pass; children under 12 are admitted free.
Bike tours
The Sunday recreational rides are fund-raisers for the Davis Phinney Foundation; a post-ride barbecue raises money for Best Buddies International, a charity for people with intellectual disabilities.
(The Davis Phinney Foundation supports those living with Parkinson's disease. The former pro cyclist is just now recovering from two brain operations to relieve some of his symptoms of the disease.)
The 100-mile road tour starts at the Sea Otter Bridge at 7 a.m. and finishes in the Sea Otter Festival Area. The 15-mile ride begins at the Yokohama Bridge at 10:30 a.m. and finishes in the festival area.
