You wouldn't think you'd have to explain the bike lane parking law to people attending the 2008 Seattle International Bike Expo on Saturday, but here it is:
“Do not park in a bicycle lane.” — page 78, Washington Driver Guide.
Apparently the lure of “free” (illegal) parking close to the site of this year's expo at Terminal 30 on East Marginal Way was too good to pass up. Scores of cars were parked illegally in the bike lane.
Parking available
There was plenty of free parking within a short walking distance of the event, the Cascade Bicycle Club arranged for shuttle buses from parking areas and the Bike Works provided secure parking for bicycles at the event.
Even so, when I pedaled out of the event Saturday afternoon, I saw cars filling the northbound East Marginal Way bike lane for at least a half-mile. I also saw three officers from the Seattle Police Department busily writing tickets.
I stopped to talk to one cop. He observed:
“This is the definition of irony, parking in a bike lane to go to a bike show.”
Sunday
So if you're thinking of going to the show on Sunday, here's what the Cascade Bicycle Club's website says about expo parking:
Bike Works will be providing secure bike parking for a $2 suggested donation. There are ample parking spaces within a 15-20 minute walk of the event, so just like you were attending a stadium event, please give yourself 30 minutes to park and arrive at the show. Free shuttle buses will depart from the parking areas every 15 minutes. A convenient passenger drop off and pick up zone and ADA parking only will be provided at event site. For driving directions and bus information check our Expo directions. Also, a handy printable parking/walking map, with parking options and shuttle bus map.
