You might find the name Kajuan Cornish in more bicycling stories than that of Floyd Landis or Lance Armstrong for the next few days.
A judge in Newport News, Virginia, ordered the 19-year-old man to pay a $1,050 fine for recklessly riding his bicycle across an intersection during rush hour.
Virginia has an abusive driver law that charges fines against drivers with egregious traffic offenses. Even before this incident, the governor said the fees had failed and called on the legislature to repeal them.
Details please
All the stories I've read have been skimpy on details. In one Cornish says the cop told him he was speeding on his 18-speed Huffy (he was rushing to get back to work); others said that motorists had to slow down to avoid hitting Cornish as he passed through the intersection.
The CycleDog blog, where I first spotted this gem, is curious about the details too. He asks, “Is it somehow illegal to force motorists to slow down?”
Big mess
The cop who issued the ticket said he would have issued a warning, if not the ticket.
“If he gets hit, then we have a mess.”
Maybe the fine is for the big mess a collision might have made?

The AP says Corning is due back in court in February.
