Updates: “City pulling for cycling dignitary,” Chico ER, 12/27/07

Bicyclists are showing their love for Ed McLaughlin, a bicycling advocate and longtime cycling coordinator for the Chico Velo bicycle club in Chico, California.

McLaughlin was injured in a bicycling accident on Friday, Dec. 21, when he was riding with a group on a bike path and struck a small pole meant to restrict motor vehicles.

More than 200 supporters showed up Monday evening, Christmas Eve, for a “healing celebration” at the downtown plaza park. I think it's great that so many who benefited from his efforts came out to show their support.

Improvement

McLaughlin's condition has been upgraded from serious to fair condition, according to an article in the Oroville Mercury Register. He has slight movement in his toes and arms and is undergoing respiratory therapy at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose.

A physcian said the 63-year-old's excellent physical condition will help in his recovery.

McLaughlin was riding in a tight group when he warned those behind about an upcoming bollard, then hit a second one. It tore off the fork and he was thrown, striking his head.

Updates on his condition can be found at Ed McLaughlin update page at ChicoVelo.

Bike club

Chico Velo is an active bicycle club based in the home of Chico State University about 90 miles north of Sacramento. It sponsors a half-dozen bicycling events annually, including the Wildflower Century in April.
