If you're pedaling through North Portland on your bicycle and feel some hunger pangs, you might want to swing by the “bike-thru” window at the Little Red Bike Cafe.
Only open a couple of months, the breakfast and lunch cafe will feed anyone who wants some homemade goodness in the form of sandwiches, baked goods, ice cream and locally roasted coffees. But cyclists do get that 50-cent drink discount that others don't.
Owners Evan and Ali explain all the trials of opening a restaurant and feature their tasty menu offerings at the Little Red Bike Cafe blog. Don't read it on an empty stomach.
Farmers' market
The owners are native Portlanders who used to do a little cooking for a booth at the Portland farmers' market on Saturdays.
If the restaurant name and bike-thru window isn't enough to tip you off that they like bikes, how about the sandwich names “Paperboy Special,” “The Messenger” and the “Tandem Sandwich.”
They support local vendors, especially those who deliver food by bicycle, according to the Ecospace Conscious Community blog. For instance his coffee bean supplier pedals about an hour to deliver the beans.
The cafe is located at 4823 N. Lombard, Portland, Oregon. It's open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays, although there's after-hours service at the “bike-thru” window.
Thanks for the tip from Curt.
