Labor Day weekend bike tours

Although September's cooler weather means it's been dubbed “Century Month,” there aren't many long rides planned for this Labor Day weekend. There are some exceptions I've found in Georgia and Pennsylvania:

Atlanta One Love Century

One is sponsored by the Metro Atlanta Cycling Club. The One Love Century begins Saturday at Stonewall Tell Elementary School and follows a course through south Fulton, Rico, Palmetto, and Cowetta County. Includes maps, cue sheets, T-shirts, etc. For information, check the One Love Century registration (.pdf).

MACC was founded in 1987 with the noble mission to “promote cycling in the black community and build camaraderie among all cyclists.” They do this by sponsoring rides and taking road trips to the Hotter'n Hell (next is Aug. 23, 2008) in Texas and Seagull Century (Oct. 6) in Maryland.

Brandywine, Pennsylvania

One is the Brandywine Tour, scheduled for Sunday in West Chester, Pennsylvania. It must be a good tour, as it draws 350 to 400 cyclists on a holiday weekend, and it's been doing so for 30 years.

Organized by the Delaware Valley Bicycle Club, the tour features five routes of 26, 50, 65, 80 and 100 miles. They meander through Chester County, although a couple of routes extend into Delaware and Lancaster County.

The tour starts at 7:30 a.m. Sunday at Pocopson Elementary School, 1105 Pocopson Road, West Chester, Pennsylvania. Check the Delaware Valley Bicycle Club for more info.

Silver Comet trail, Georgia

The Silver Comet Labor Day Bike Ride (.pdf registration) is slated to begin Monday morning in Rockport, Georgia, with four rides of 13, 30, 68 and 100 miles on the Silver Comet bike trail.

The century ride starts in Rockport and follows the trail to the Brush Mountain Tunnel and returns. It leaves the Silver Comet for a long pull up Mountain View Road.

The Silver Comet bike trail is currently 54 miles of paved trail in Cobb, Paulding and Polk counties. It's a rail-to-trail that originally carried the Seaboard Coast Line trains from Atlanta to Birmingham.

Pullman, Chicago

Although not a century, this looks interesting. The civic organization for the historic Pullman neighborhood on the southside of Chicago is sponsoring a 30-mile ride on Monday. The ride celebrates the work (labor, get it?) of those who lived in the Pullman and Calumet regions. More about Pullman Labor Day bike ride

Rides not listed

This list is not comprehensive and there are probably quite a few rides that I missed. If you know of one, just leave a comment so other readers can find out about it. If you can leave a link for ride details, that would be best.
