The president of the International Olympic Committee says some events — including cycling — might need to be postposed if Beijing's pollution spikes during next year's games.
Pollution is a problem in Beijing, which is said to have some of the worst levels of nitrogen dioxide on the planet.
IOC pres Jacques Rogge said pollution wouldn't be a problem for all sports, but it could cause delays for endurance events.
“Definitely the endurance sports like the cycling race, where you have to compete for six hours, these are examples of competitions that might be postponed or delayed to another day.”
To help reduce pollution, the city plans to curb 1 million of the city's 3.3 million cars during the Games next year. In spite of that, Olympians from Australia are planning to stay away from the city as long as possible.
