How to build a tall bike without welding

I always marvel at the cyclists on tall bikes. How do they build them? How do they ride them? How do they stop and dismount?

Tim Anderson, a regular contributor at Instructables website, answers the first question with his recent contribution “Build Your Own Tall Bike Without Welding.”

The welding aspect of making a tall bike is certainly a drawback to most garage bike mechanics. No welding? This is interesting.

The tall bike Anderson made is based on something he made as a kid called an “upside down” tall bike. In his first version he used hose clamps to make the attachments; in later versions he switched to nylon string hardened with epoxy.

And yes, that's a piece of lumber supporting the seat. It doesn't fatigue like metal. He also used wood for the handlebar.

Anderson says he's ridden the bicycle off and on for 10 years. He supplies this caveat:

“Warning – you can fall off one of these and get hurt.
At least one person broke an arm falling off one of my bikes. I felt really bad and didn't let anyone ride my tallbikes for a year or so.”

See “Build Your Own Tall Bike Without Welding” for step-by-step instructions.
