The Amgen Tour of California is visiting three new locales among the 12 host cities in the third annual bike race, scheduled for February 17-24, 2008.

The 700-mile bike race will start with a prologue in Palo Alto and conclude in Pasadena with a circuit race. Those two cities are new for the California tour, as is Modesto, the beginning site for Stage 3.

The tour also is visiting Santa Rosa again, the residence of this year's winner Levi Leipheimer of the Discovery Channel team. However, for the first time the race doesn't start in San Francisco with a race up to Coit Tower.

In making the announcement, the press release called it a “Tour de France-style” bicycle road race. Let's hope it doesn't adopt the “style” of this year's Tour de France, with frequent doping controversies.

No definitive mileage or bike routes have been drawn up yet, but here's the Tour's list of stages and host cities:

Prologue: Sunday, Feb. 17 – Palo Alto
Stage 1: Monday, Feb. 18 – Sausalito to Santa Rosa
Stage 2: Tuesday, Feb. 19 – Santa Rosa to Sacramento
Stage 3: Wednesday, Feb. 20 – Modesto to San Jose
Stage 4: Thursday, Feb. 21 – Seaside to San Luis Obispo
Stage 5: Friday, Feb. 22 – Solvang time trial
Stage 6: Saturday, Feb. 23 – Santa Barbara to Santa Clarita
Stage 7: Sunday, Feb. 24 – Santa Clarita to Pasadena road race, concluding with a circuit race in Pasadena
