Innovations in Cycling is recalling about 55,000 combination tire inflator-hand pumps because they can explode under pressure.

The devices, sold under the names Genuine Innovations Second Wind MTB and Wrench Force Two Shot, can shatter under pressure when inflating tires if the tire valve is blocked.

The company and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (press release) report 12 incidents of exploding pumps in which six people were injured with cuts, bruises or ringing in the ears.

The hybrid pumps use a CO2 cartridge to inflate a tire under pressure or a hand pump to do it manually. The models recalled are sold for bicyclists and motorsports enthusiasts.

The pumps were sold at specialty retail stores nationwide and bicycle or motorcycle/ATV catalogues and online stores. The Genuine Innovations Second Wind MTB and the Wrench Force Two Shot were sold from January 2004 through May 2007 for about $30. The Second Wind MTB was sold as part of the Genuine Innovations ATV Deluxe Tire Repair & Inflation Kit from July 2005 to January 2007 for about $50, according to a CPSC press release.

Look for the following part numbers on the packaging:

Genuine Innovations Second Wind MTB model with part numbers 2525, 2525-O or 3519, or

Wrench Force Two Shot model with part numbers 84995 or 80383 combination tire inflator and hand pumps.

The company urges consumers to stop using the pumps and contact the company for a free replacement pump head. Contact Innovations In Cycling at (800) 340-1050 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. MT Monday through Thursday, or visit their website at www.genuineinnovations.com.
