(Update: Aug. 11 — Wiens wins at Leadville; bloodied Landis finishes 2nd. No Armstrong)
(Update: Aug. 5 — This match-up is still unclear. The latest comes from VeloNews and quotes Armstrong's spokesperson, Mark Higgins. Yes, Armstrong rode some passes in the Leadville area, and no, he is not competing in the race.
I think we may not know for sure until race starts on Aug. 11.)
It looks like both Floyd Landis and Lance Armstrong will be racing at the Leadville 100 mountain bike race on Aug. 11 afterall.
Rob Lucas at UltraRob Adventures first had the scoop last week, as he pieced together some info about Armstrong riding part of the Leadville course with trainer Chris Carmichael and scheduling a charity event in Colorado Springs — 3 hours away — on Aug. 9.
Many of you might remember that Landis and Armstrong said late last year that they'd be making the grueling mountain bike race. It drew a lot of attention because Armstrong is retired from pro cycling and Landis is not allowed to race in UCI races while he fights the doping charges.
Armstrong subsequently said he couldn't make it due to a scheduling conflict (See: “Lance vs. Landis — good idea while it lasted”).
Well, Rob put together the evidence that Armstrong is back in it, and it was confirmed by an article at the Bicycling.com website.
As for their race worthiness, Rob doesn't expect either of them to be in top form. But I think it will still be cool to see them racing again.
