No place is safe when drunken drivers are on the road.
A motorist plowed into three bicyclists riding in the bike lane on a newly reconstructed bridge in Neenah, Wisconsin, on Sunday, killing one and injuring the other two.
A 46-year-old Menasha woman was charged with one count of causing death by drunken driving and two counts of causing injury by drunken driving, according to the Oshkosh Northwestern.com. A preliminary breath test showed her blood alcohol content was three times the legal limit.
Bicyclist Robert Melzer, 52, was dead at the scene and his wife, Ruth, was listed in serious condition at Theda Clark Medical Center. The third cyclist, Joanne Grobe, was treated and released.
The three were riding north on the bridge when they were struck from behind by the car at about 2:40 p.m. The 60-year-old bridge over the Fox River had been reconstructed and reopened in October with two lanes for traffic, two bikes lanes and two sidewalks.
The driver tested .254 percent on a breathylizer test, more than three times the legal limit of .08 percent, reported the Green Bay Press-Gazette. She was scheduled for a court appearance on Tuesday.
