Are you looking for the end-of-season challenge to test your bicycling fitness? If you live in the Pacific Northwest, you might consider the High Pass Challenge presented by the Cascade Bicycle Club.
Offered by the Seattle-based bicycle club for the first time in 2007, the Challenge is a 120-mile, one-day bike ride that features 7,500 feet of elevation gain.
Cyclists will begin in Packwood, Washington, between 7 and 8 a.m. on Sept. 23, and climb Independence Pass, pedal past Spirit Lake and arrive at the Windy Ridge Viewpoint of the Mount St. Helens blast zone in the national monument. Then they return to Packwood by 5 p.m. to make the 10-hour time limit.
This bike ride is limited to 500 experienced cyclists; it's not recommended to novices.
Gold, silver and bronze-colored medallions will be awarded finishers at 3, 4, and 5 p.m. respectively.
There are more details online, and you can sign up online at High Pass Challenge Registration.
If you want to do this, don't hesitate. These Cascade bike rides are popular. Cascade already has announced sell-outs on the Seattle to Portland (STP), Ride from Seattle to Vancouver (BC) and Party (RSVP), and Ride Around Washington (RAW).
