Robic wins Race Across America; more than a dozen still on course

Although Slovenian ultra-cyclist Jure Robic rolled across the Race Across America finish line in Atlantic City on Tuesday, about a dozen solo riders are still struggling on their bicycles two days later.

One of them, diabetic Vail cyclist Kerry White, is continuing her ride despite being disqualified with 1,300 miles to go for failing to meet a time cut off earlier this week.

After starting on June 10 for 25 solo men and five solo women, RAAM is winding to a close. Most of the teams, which started June 12, have finished, except for two 2-man teams.

Stats

A complete roster of the riders and the finishing times is located at RAAM stat reports.

This was Robic's third RAAM win; he finished the 3,042 miles in 8 days, 19 hours and 33 minutes.

Among those still out on the course is John Spurgeon, the Hillsboro, Oregon, cyclist who is riding a single speed. Also, 61-year-old David Jones of Canoga Park, California is still riding. He's 3 1/2 hours ahead of the record for those aged 60-plus years. They each have about 310 miles to go.

Diabetes

None of the five women cyclists beat the time cut off, but White decided to keep on riding anyway. The 36-year-old is afflicted with Type 1 diabetes and has something to prove to herself and her supporters. Strangers have stopped her on the road to hear her inspiring story.

Another inspiring cyclist out on the course is Alessandro Colo. The 46-year-old Italian dropped out in 2004 after 1,000 due to saddle sores and again in 2005 due to the horrific weather conditions that year, namely heat and wind. Colo has passed the Rouzierville, Pennsylvania, time station, which puts him within 217 miles of the finish.
