The 22nd annual Ride the Rockies bike ride ended early for a 52-year-old Littleton man when a car made a left turn in front of him as he sped down Rabbit Ears Pass on Sunday.

Meanwhile, authorities are saying that the New Castle wildfire that spread to 1,000 acres Tuesday afternoon won't affect the 2,000-person bike tour.

The cyclist, Kent Lewis, smashed into the passenger side of the vehicle and was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center where he was treated for cuts and bruises and released on Monday.

Private ambulance

A spokeswoman for the 2007 Ride the Rockies said the man was taken to the hospital by one of the two private ambulances hired to accompany the bicycle tour. He chose not to continue the ride, according to Steamboat Pilot&Today.

There was no information whether charges were filed against the motorist in the collision on the 98-mile ride from Frisco to Steamboat Springs.

Wildfires

One of the state's wildfires that sprang up from lightning strikes on Sunday raised speculation that the Ride the Rockies might have detour.

The fire, 8 miles west of Wednesday's destination of Glenwood Springs, has burned 1,000 acres and threatens 200 homes, some of which have been evacuated. Highway 6, a frontage road along I-70, has been closed.

The Ride the Rockies bike ride was expected to continue as scheduled, reports 9news.com and the Rocky Mountain News .

A reporter for CBS4 in Denver reported Tuesday that bike ride organizers were considering either routing the ride off Highway 6 onto I-70 or somehow moving the whole operation around the fire.
