It's National Bike Week; get ready for Bike to Work Day

Like the banner says, May is National Bike Month. And Monday through Friday is National Bike Week. Let's go ride our bikes.

The League of American Bicyclists is a clearinghouse to find out about many — but not all — of the events going on this week across the US. It's a good place to start looking for events in your area.

One of the biggest draws of bike “month” and bike “week” is “Bike to Work Day.” Here in the Seattle area, that's going to be Friday, although bicycle commuter events are happening on different days elsewhere.

Ride of Silence

Also this week, cyclists in hundreds of cities around the globe will embark on the solemn Ride of Silence beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The ride honors those who have been killed or injured riding on public roadways.

Check for Ride of Silence locations in the US, and internationally.

Bike to Work

Cities, counties, corporations and local bike clubs and advocacy groups are variously involved in the many Bike to Work Day events planned later this week to encourage more people to commute by bike.

While it's easy to understand the participation by bicycling groups, I think the local governments and corporations are getting involved because they see the rising costs of traffic congestion and motor vehicle pollution in their cities.

One of the top Bike to Work Day events is operated right here in the Seattle area by the Cascade Bicycle Club. Read more details about the Friday commute and the 37 commute stations in the Puget Sound region where cyclists can pick up free stuff and get their bikes checked out.

In Washington state, Snohomish County and Tacoma also have events planned.

Another big Bike to Work Day city is Washington DC. Among other activities, local bike shops are offering bikes free that day to registered users on Friday.

Bike to Work Day in San Francisco is Thursday. Check the 511.org website for more about activities that day.

Many more cities are listed at the Bike Month Special Events website.
