Canadian cyclist Svein Tuft won the inaugural US Open Cycling Championships on a snowy day in Virginia on Saturday.

The rider for the Symmetrics team bridged a gap to solo breakaway cyclist Jonathan Patrick McCarty (US) of the Slipstream team, and attacked on the last of eight 5.5-mile circuits around Richmond.

Tuft crossed the finish first, followed by McCarty then Argentinian Alejandro Borrajo of the Rite Aid team.

The racers could have imagined they were plunked down in the Dolomites during the Giro d'Italia for all the snow on the ground. The race, which started in Williamsburg, was delayed because of the unseasonable snowfall.

Tina Pic of the Colavita/Sutter Home team won the women's race, a circuit course around Richmond.

Tuft won the prologue of the Redlands Bicycle Classic last month, finishing 17th after the 3rd and final stage; he won the two-week Tour of Cuba earlier in the year.
