Hincapie breaks wrist, won't finish Tour of California

American cyclist George Hincapie broke his wrist in that collision early in Saturday's Stage 6 of the Amgen Tour of California and won't return for the final stage on Sunday.

In spite of the injury, Hincapie turned in a gritty performance to drive the peloton during the middle of the stage as it lagged behind a 9-man breakaway that threatened to steal the golden jersey from Discovery Channel team leader Levi Leipheimer.

The Discovery Channel pro cycling team's fan website, Paceline, reported that Hincapie and teammate Tony Cruz touched wheels and went down.

An X-ray after the race confirmed that Hincapie had broken his radius — the forearm bone that runs from the outside of the elbow to the thumb side of the wrist. His recovery period is unknown.

Hincapie, 33, suffered some hard luck early in the season last year too, when his bicycle malfunctioned at the Paris-Roubaix spring classic and he crashed, severely injuring his shoulder.

He recovered in time for the Tour de France, where he grabbed the yellow jersey for one day. He later won the US Pro Road Race Championship in his hometown of Greenville, South Carolina.

You can send Hincapie get-well wishes at the guestbook at his website.
