(Update: See 85 straight hours on a stationary bicycle)
“I have a high threshold for pain.”
That's George Hood of Chicago explaining how he can ride a stationary bicycle hour after hour in his attempt to achieve a place in the Guinness Book of World Records by bicycling for 83 consecutive hours — nearly 3 1/2 days.
Hood must also have a high threshold for boredom. I've found that riding one of those things is mind-numbing; after 30 or 40 minutes I'm ready for an off-bicycle experience.
Guinness requires that Hood ride the equivalent of 12 miles every hour; he gets a 5 minute break every hour. Taking in only liquid protein and complex carbohydrates, he takes his bathroom breaks with a tennis can behind a curtain.
The 49-year-old will finish the drive for a world record Saturday evening. He already got into the book in 1986 for jumping rope for 13 hours.
