Colorado features two week-long bicycle tours next June

Maybe it's a bad time to write about bicycle tours in Colorado just after a blizzard hit the state with up to 25 inches of snow last week.

But all the snow will melt, and the passes will open and hundreds of bicyclists will be taking to the high country this summer in two week-long bicycle tours.

I was reminded about the annual Bicycle Tour of Colorado andThe Denver Post Ride the Rockies when I stumbled across a blog written by one of the participants in one of those tours.

Tom Zellman at 2006 Bicycle Tour of Colorado filed his posts in reverse order (oldest first) to give a chronological feel to his pictures and experiences in this summer's tour. He goes into great detail about the towns and passes the tour visited; I'd recommend it for anyone who wants to get a feel — warts and all — for that bike tour. (That's a picture above of a cyclist heading down to Ridgeway that's posted on the blog.)

2007 routed

The Bicycle Tour of Colorado already has posted its dates and host cities for 2007. The 418-mile bike ride, slated for June 24-30, 2007, will start in Steamboat Springs and progress to Walden, Winter Park, Copper Mountain, Leadville, Kremmling and back to Steamboat Springs. Cyclists will cross 8 mountain passes.

If you check the tour's registration page, you'll see you can save quite a bit of money by registering early.

The ever-popular Denver Post Ride the Rockies bike tour is still firming up dates and routes, although the website estimates a 6 or 7-day bike ride with a start date of June 17, 2007. Dates will be confirmed by December 31, 2006. You'll want to keep an eye on this one, as spaces are awarded by lottery and the cut-off is usually in mid-February.

You can keep up to date with more than 70 week-long bike tours at the Biking Bis Across State Bicycle Tours pages.
