Out for a Sunday bike ride, Andrew Heitner had paused on a Miami drawbridge when it unexpectedly started to open.
Heitner grabbed the railing and started yelling for help. As the span reached its full upright position, Heitner had a decision to make — his body or his bike. He told a Miami TV station:
“I think I was holding onto the bag with my hand and the bike with my leg, and as it started going up higher and higher, I knew I'd basically need to hold my whole weight up, so I let the bag go and then I let the bike go.”
As the bridge was lowered, Heitner jumped off. He was not injured.
The news reports focused on the series of lapses that occurred to allow a cyclist to be stranded on a rising drawbridge, but didn't tell what happened to the bike. I'm happy to report, however, the segment (available at the Local10 website) did show Heitner walking his bicycle and waving to the cameras.
