Some favorite bicycle quotes

Writing this blog for the past 18 months or so, I've run across a few quotes regarding bicycling. I've collected them in the “Bicycle Quotes” folder. While I'm away for a short bicycle tour, I've compiled some of my favorites:

The simple beauty of bicycle touring, March 15, 2006

“You reach the top of a mountain pass … it’s real … it does something to you. Humping up a steep 1,000-foot elevation with 40 pounds of gear, it’s hard. You’ve accomplished something. And there’s still all this country there before you.”

Bill Bundschu, 72

Sportsman of the Year, December 30, 2005

“It's nice to win. I'll never win again.”

Lance Armstrong

Bike messenger, November 7, 2005

“On a good day it feels like flying. It's like we're the only people in the city and everyone else are obstacles. It's really a dead-end job, but it's beautiful.”

Bike messenger Dana Heater, DC

Bikes, guitars and girls, October 14, 2005

“Bicycles are almost as good as guitars for meeting girls.”

Bob Weir, founding member of Grateful Dead

Kentucky's cantankerous canines, September 15, 2005

“Besides the trees, eastern Kentucky housed a wildly variant population of canines curiously united in one over-arching intent – that was to peel the flesh from my shins like a ripe banana. This included a way-too-near miss by a Rottweiler and a valiant attempt by a three-legged collie.”

Rick Gunn, newspaper photographer and bike tourer

Jay Leno on Bush bike accident, July 11, 2005

“What does a bicycle have in common with the war in Iraq? President Bush doesn't know how to stop either one of them.”

Jay Leno, Tonight Show

War of the Worlds author, June 29, 2005

“Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the human race.”

H.G. Wells
