(UPDATE — No charges in bicycling deaths of 2 Indiana policemen)
Police across Indiana are mourning two cyclists killed on a cross-state bicycle charity ride to raise money for fallen comrades.
State Police Lt. Gary Dudley, 52, left, and former Lake County Police Chief Gary Martin, 63, right, were killed in the collision as they rode their bicycles on Tuesday. A third cyclist, retired Indianapolis Police Officer Spencer Moore, was airlifted to an Illinois hospital.
The accident happened about 50 miles north of Terre Haute on Indiana 63, a four-lane highway near the Indiana-Illinois state line.
According to AP and the ride's website, a freight truck struck a trailing support van from behind, shoving it into the cyclists. The support van carried a banner reading “Caution Cyclists Ahead.” Police said charges are pending the investigation, which could take several weeks.
The driver of the truck, Gary Adams of Owensboro, Kentucky, apparently didn't brake before hitting the van, AP reports. There are no skid marks at the scene.
The charity, Indiana Concerns of Police Survivors, supports families of officers killed in the line of duty. About 30 active and retired policemen were expected to take part in the 1,300 tour, which had been organized by Dudley.
Indiana state flags will fly at half-staff throughout the state on Monday, the date of Dudley's funeral.
