(Update: Florida cyclist wins Race to Replace, Aug. 12, 2006)
If you happen to be in Indianapolis with your bicycle on Saturday, you might want to head down to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to ride with Lance Armstrong in the “Race to Replace.”
“Race to Replace” was initially coined as the slogan to find a Discovery Channel teammate able to lead the team at the 2006 Tour de France after Lance Armstrong's retirement from the sport.
This “Race to Replace” being ridden at the home of the Indy 500 is the public relations and cancer fund-raising event to pick a cyclist who will join the Discovery team at the US Pro Championships in Greenville, S.C., on Sept. 1-3.
All proceeds go to the Indiana University Cancer Center and the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
Registration for the “Race to Replace” contest is closed. But on-site registration is still open for a one-lap ride around the 2.5-mile track with Armstrong.
The public ride costs $20 and is open to anyone 13 and older, but anyone 18 and under must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian. Registration for the one-lap public bike ride is open at the speedway from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 6 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
Heats for cyclists who have registered to compete to become the honorary Discovery team member begin at 7 a.m. Saturday. The cyclists — competing in age groups — will ride 10 laps over the 2.5 mile course. Winners in 8 brackets will be chosen, and the fastest overall goes to Greenville.
A VIP luncheon with the riders is scheduled from 12 to 1; an autograph session with Team Discovery and the riders is scheduled from 1- 1:30. The one-lap ride with Armstrong is supposed to start at 2 p.m. The awards ceremony is at 3 p.m.
