There's a certain sound that accompanies Lance Armstrong on his ride on a couple of stages of RAGBRAI. It's a roar.
As 7-time Tour de France winner Armstrong rides his bicycle in the Wednesday and Thursday stages of the RAGBRAI bike ride across Iowa, bystanders and other riders cheer.
Since he and his retinue are going so fast, the sound has been described as a rolling roar as he passes through town, according to the Des Moines Register, organizer of the week-long event in its 34th year.
Armstrong told thousands who jammed Newton on Wednesday night that he'd return for the entire ride in 2007.
“So this is RAGBRAI. I wasted all those Julys in France. This is my commitment. Next year I’ll start in the west, and finish getting my tires wet in the east. Can I get registered now?”
Armstrong is cycling RAGBRAI to raise awareness for cancer research, one of the goals of his Lance Armstrong Foundation. He'll testify at a Congressional hearing for cancer funding in Iowa City on Friday.
He's also finding time to talk to folks along the route, and stop and enjoy the occasional beer. In Sully, he stopped at the Coffee Cup Cafe for a glass of water and a slice of coconut cream pie. Asked about news that Tour de France champion Floyd Landis had failed a drug test, Armstrong said: “I'm not here to talk about that.”
