Bicycle child carriers recall

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled 14,000 Schwinn Deluxe Bicycle Child Carriers.

If you own one of these carriers, you should stop using it immediately. The CPSC says if the unit is not fully seated on the rack, the plastic guide tabs on the carrier can break, causing the seat to fall off the bike.

The manufacturer, PTI Sports Inc. of Coral Gables, Florida, has five reports of seats falling off bikes, three which results in minor injuries to children. The units were made in China.

The carrier is described as gray plastic with a blue rubber back and seat pad, a gray head rest, and black straps. Look for the model SW571T printed on the carrier’s packaging and in the owner’s manual. “PTI” is printed on a yellow warning sticker on the back of the carrier seat.

The carriers were sold at department stores between September 2004 and November 2005.

Stop using the seats immediately and contact PTI Sports at (800) 515-0074 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday. Or email at customerservice@ptisports.com, or visit the firm’s web site at www.schwinnbike.com
