When I lived in California, I had a neighbor who bought a '60s vintage Chevy, parked it in his garage, and proceeded to take it apart, clean or replace each piece, and put it back together again.
For those who do that to classic bicycles, there's a show and sale for you. The 26th annual Ann Arbor/Saline Classic Bicycle Show and Swap Meet convenes Saturday.
The Classic's website says its the oldest, biggest, and best such show in the nation. Between 3,000 to 5,000 people stroll past some 6,000 old Schwinns, Elgins, Huffys, and Shelbys that are on display.
There's also a classic bicycle contest, a Rollfast Hopalong Cassidy model from 1950 won last year. Owners can offer their bicycles up for auction, and visitors can see what vendors more than 250 vendors are selling.
Pictures from previous shows are posted on the website. These bikes are clean. I'd love to fix up one of these old pups, but the problem is I wouldn't want to ride it around because it could get messed up. Imagine putting in that work then scratching the paint job.
The event runs from 8 to 3, Saturday, April 30, at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds, 5055 Ann Arbor-Saline Road, Ann Arbor, MI, 48103.
The Ann Arbor News had a piece about the show.
