Cities take note: Keep those bicycle routes and bike lanes clear of obstructions.
A jury in Tucson has awarded $700,000 to 47-year-old cyclist Tom Harris, who hit a sandbag holding down a construction sign, fell off his bike and was hit by a car in a three-year-old incident.
The Arizona Daily Star reports that Harris' attorneys argued that the city neglected to set up an alternative bicycle route, as required by city policy, and the barricades were set up improperly, funneling Harris into a narrower space.
Harris has lost the use of his left arm because of the accident. The city is weighing whether to appeal the decision. The construction and barricade companies settled out of court.
