Severely injured in the opening stage of the Circuit de la Sarthe bike race last week, American cyclist Saul Raisin appears to be emerging from his coma, according to reports on his website.

Doctors had put the 23-year-old Credit Agricole cyclist in a drug-induced coma after a blood vessel ruptured in his brain and the blood had to be drained by surgery, VeloNews reported last week.

An entry posted Tuesday on Raisin's website says:

Saul has had a good day, responding to questions about events and people and things from his past by squeezing his parents' hands. He was also able to move all of his fingers and toes. Please keep him in your thoughts as there is still a long road ahead.

Raisin's uncle, John Raisin, told the Dalton (Georgia) Daily Citizen that his nephew had recognized his parents and answered questions. “He squeezed once for yes and twice for no. This was his best day yet. We’re all very excited.”

Earlier on the website, last Wednesday, Raisin's parents had reported that he was resting in a French hospital with a broken collarbone and rib and was expected to return to racing during the summer. The next day they wrote he had suffered a setback and they were rushing to the hospital in Angers, France.

News of Raisin's recovery is wonderful. Let's hope it continues. I'm sure we all hope that Raisin's condition improves and he gets through this.

Raisin, who lives in Dalton, Georgia, has been a pro since 2003 and has top 10 stage finishes in several races, including last year's Tour de Georgia.
