Bicycling his way to fitness

Sometime soon, the blogger at My Big Fat Geek Cycling bLog is going to have to change the name of his website…. maybe to just My Geek Cycling bLog.

For the past 18 months, he has used his bicycle to slowly and surely pedal himself back into shape. He's a poster boy for cycling to a healthy lifestyle.

The blogger says he weighed 189 pounds in 1989 when he stopped riding his bike. In the intervening 15 years, he gained an average 11 pounds a year.

He decided it was time for a lifestyle change when his weight hit 350 pounds in October 2004. When he had dropped 50 pounds by that December, he rewarded himself by buying a bicycle. Then he began commuting to work at his job in Columbus, Ga.

Some guys may commute by bike for the benefit of the environment and all mankind, but I guess I’m more selfish than that. I need a convenient way to workout and skip the gym. I want to feel good in my body and my soul. I want to be healthy and stick around to see my grandchildren grow up. I want to grow really, really old with my wife, and never need a wheelchair and oxygen. I want to see the look on my future great-grandchildren’s faces when I buy them all new bicycles in the year 2036.

His plans to buy another bike when he hits 200 pounds.

His blog chronicles his attempts to reach that goal by riding with his local club and continuing his bike commuting. He also writes about other bike issues.

Recently he's been sidelined from bicycling by chest pains. A stress test showed a possible blockage. He was hospitalized last week for a heart cath and the results have come back negative. No blockages. The chest pains were from something else, and he'll be able to climb back on his bike in two weeks. And that's good news.
