(Update: March 17 — 3-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond is honorary public ride director.)
Here's an opportunity for weekend warrior cyclists to ride the last few miles of the Tour of Georgia course just hours before the pros do it.
Recreational cyclists who participate in a cancer fund-raiser can ride the final 25 miles of the Cumming to Alpharetta route as part of the BriarRose Grand Peloton. It's scheduled for the last day of the Ford Tour de Georgia (April 18-23), a 650-mile six-stage race sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale.
Participants must be among the first 400 to raise a minimum $500, which goes to the Georgia Cancer Coalition. The cyclists will receive a Hincapie Sportswear jersey and a police escort through Alpharetta hours before the pros arrive.
Cyclists will ride in one of three groups headed by a celebrity team captain. They are: Norman Alvis, a member of the 1988 Olympic team in Seoul; Mari Holden, five-time women's national champion; and Steve Hegg, 1984 gold medalists at the Olympics in LA.
More information is available at the Ford Tour de Georgia website. Registration is available at active.com, or call LEJ Sports at 770-641-7519.
This is the fourth year for the Tour de Georgia. Previous winners are Tom Danielson in 2005, Lance Armstrong in 2004, and Chris Horner in 2003.
