The Amgen Tour of California website is now offering a live video feed from the motorcycles. Just go to the main page and follow the links.
It's kind of choppy, but it is live. Just make sure you have your airsickness bag near by.
Looks like a three-man breakaway. CyclingNews tells me its Mike Creed (TIAA CREF), Tim Johnson (Health Net), and Ben Jacques-Maynes (Kodak). VeloNews are also offering race updates; CyclingNews appeared to have the fewest technical glitches as the race progressed yesterday.
The official Tour of California text feed is finally in the correct order, newest post at top, but it's sporadic. I haven't seen anything in about 20 minutes.
(Update: Now the video feed reports the gap between the breakaway and the peloton. Nice touch.)
They're cycling a stretch of Palomares Canyon Road in Castro Valley that I used to ride when I lived in California. The Hekaton Classic Century used to tackle the canyon from the other direction. I remember a group of us struggling up the hill one year and suddenly being passed by 5 or 6 riders who were just flying. It was the first time I'd seen anyone “dancing on the pedals” in person.
