New bike path at Santa Barbara necessary, but costly

What's a bike path cost these days? The so-called Broida Expressway at UC-Santa Barbara cost $583 per foot.

The 900-foot, 12-foot-wide, bicycle path was completed at a cost of $525,000 recently to link the east and west sides of the campus, according to the UC Santa Barbara student newspaper, the Daily Nexus.

The cost was covered by a $3 per student lock-in fee per quarter beginning in Spring 2004. The fee will be lifted this spring after three years. Soaring fuel costs caused by hurricanes Katrina and Rita were partly blamed for the expense of the project.

Even at a $39 cost per student over the period, it beats the $120 to $150 ticket cyclists could receive for riding on the existing pedestrian sidewalk that was the only other way between Broida Hall and Webb Hall, the Daily Nexus reported.
