So there was something to all that talk about the Tour de France champion and the Grammy Award winner splitting up.

Lance Armstrong and Sheryl Crow made it official Friday night with a simple statement:

“After much thought and consideration we have made a very tough decision to split up. We both have a deep love and respect for each other and we ask that everyone respect our privacy during this very difficult time.”

The two had been dating for nearly two years and got engaged last fall, after Armstrong had retired from professional cycling with his 7th Tour de France victory.

Armstrong, 34, and Crow, 43, had announced an April wedding, but rumors starting circulating about three weeks ago that they were going to break the engagement. The two had been living on a ranch in the Austin area.

Crow has been busy promoting her Wildflower album and Armstrong is gearing up to support the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team, to which he is still under contract even though he's not actively cycling.

Armstrong and Crow were definitely a celebrity power couple, drawing attention wherever they went. In November, Crow told AP that she didn't care for all the attention the two received; just this past week ContactMusic.com reported that Crow thought the media's prying into their private lives — like the possibility of them visiting fertility clinics — was “grotesque.”

Armstrong has three children from his previous marriage to Kristin Armstrong.
