“It's rather sad that is takes a strike of a large labor union to turn this city into a venerable paradise for bike riding.”
BikeBlog, Dec. 21, 2005
The blogger at BikeBlog tells about joining a commute bike-pool with about seven people for Tuesday night's commute on first day of the strike. He says more bike pools are planned for tonight. Cool pix from the strike are also posted.
Other bicycling news from the transit strike:
The Village Voice reports “Transit Strike is a Bike Rider's Dream.” Since NYC's Mayor Bloomberg required cars carry four passengers to prevent overcrowded streets, there are fewer cars on the roads than normal. The reporter says the city even coned off bike lanes in places so motorists wouldn't double park in them.
Photographers are storing lots of bicycling pix from the transit strike at Flickr.com., such as above.
Days of Leisure offers advice on how to bicycle to work when it's 10 degress below freezing, noting that the extremities get colder but the core gets warmer on a bike.
An online copy of the New York City Cycling Map is available at the city's Bicycle Network Development website. Other biking resources are available at the DOT's bicycle information webpage.
Also, NYC advocacy group Time's Up! lists bike repair workshops.
