Stolen bike bust in Berkeley is just that, a bust

Karim Bicycle is open and back in business in Berkeley about five months after police swooped in to bust an alleged stolen bicycle ring.

Berkeley police served a search warrant on June 16, entered the shop and dragged out dozens of bikes for the assembled media, who duly reported the raid, as evidenced in the San Francisco Chronicle.

The Berkeley Daily Planet has revisited the “crime scene” and discovered that only one bike has been held in evidence and no charges have been filed.

Police had a tip that stolen bikes were for sale at Karim Bicycle, a used-bike shop.

Adlai Karim told the Daily Planet: “I was never arrested; no charges were filed, and they returned all but one of my bicycles.” Berkeley police confirmed that the district attorney's office decided not to file charges. The problem stems from conflicting rules about registering bicycle serial numbers and issuance of bicycle licenses.

Karim and the cops both suggest that owners write down their bicycle serial number and keep it with the receipt so they can report the number in case of theft.
